Thryambaka: Thryambaka means “one that has three eyes”
talking about Rudra or Siva who share exactly the same attributes. (1) First of
all, in the ‘vishwaroopa’ or universal form, the 3 eyes symbolically signify
the sun's rays, moon and fire. Sunlight throughout the day, moon during the
night and fire within their absence signify illumination. (2) Next, the happy
couple of eyes give sight towards the material world and it is encounters. The
3rd eye is synonymous with ‘atma-jnana’ or understanding from the Self by which
one sees the greater reality. Kamadeva or Manmatha may be the God of Desire
perennially churning your brain and causing trouble sleeping.Lord Siva is stated to possess burned Manmatha together with
his third eye. This ensures that one burns lower all desires through jnana and
progress the spiritual path. (3) The 3rd signification is portrayed with a
Pouranic story. Asuras had accumulated strength, wealth using the set of eyes
give sight towards the material world and it is that they built three
metropolitan areas. The 3 metropolitan areas symbolise Maya. Lord Siva burns
lower the metropolitan areas together with his third eye.The 3 metropolitan areas indeed represent (1) sharirathryam
- the 3 physiques - gross body, subtle body and casual body (2) prapanchathryam
- the 3 worlds - gross world, subtle world and casual world (3)
